How to Apply Online: 4-Step Process
The application process for 2026 features a streamlined, four-stage online system. Candidates must apply via upsconline.nic.in by following these steps:
Step 1: Account Creation
Register on the portal using a valid email ID and active mobile number.
All future Commission correspondence (admit cards, results) will be routed through these contact details.
Step 2: Universal Registration Number (URN) Generation
Complete the Universal Registration (UR) module to generate a permanent URN.
This number stores your core details (name, DOB, ID proof, address, category) and will be valid for all future UPSC exams. Aadhaar verification is highly recommended for faster processing.
Step 3: Common Application Form (CAF)
Fill in details applicable to multiple exams, such as educational qualifications and category.
Mandatory Requirements: Upload a recent passport-size photograph, complete a live photo capture, and upload a clear scan of your signature (signed three times on white paper in black ink).
Step 4: Examination-Specific Module (CSE 2026)
Select "Civil Services Examination 2026".
Choose your exam center preferences, Optional Subject, and exam medium.
Pay the application fee (if applicable) and submit. Ensure you save your unique Application Number.
Application Correction Window
If you make a minor error during registration, the UPSC provides a limited Correction Window. For 2026, this window opens on February 28, 2026 and closes on March 3, 2026, at 18:00 IST.
Crucial New Changes in the 2026 Notification
The UPSC has introduced several strict procedural changes this year to enhance transparency and prevent impersonation. Manika IAS urges candidates to note the following:
Mandatory Live Photo Capture: In addition to uploading a standard photo, candidates must now capture a live photo during the application process.
New Signature Guidelines: Candidates must sign three times on a white sheet using black ink, then scan and upload it clearly.
Face Authentication at Centers: Mandatory face verification and document checking will take place at the exam centers. Candidates are advised to arrive early.
URN Profile Updates: You can update your Universal Registration Number (URN) details only once. Any changes will only apply to future applications, not those already submitted.
Eligibility Restrictions: Serving IAS and IFS officers are barred from reappearing in CSE 2026. IPS candidates cannot be reallocated to the IPS.
Representation Window Reduced: The window to submit representations regarding exam questions has been reduced from 7 days to 5 days.
