 GM Rubber

News: the world’s first GM Rubber was sown in Assam.


About GM RUBBER:

  • A Rubber Board research farm has planted the world’s first genetically modified rubber on the outskirts of Guwahati at Sarutari 

  • It is developed at Kerala-based Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII)

  • This GM crop is tailored for the climate conditions of the north-east.

  •  An additional copy of gene MnSOD, or manganese-containing superoxide dismutase, is inserted in the modified crop.

  • Advantage:

    • It will have high tolerance to the severe cold conditions.

    •  RRII had earlier developed two high-yielding hybrid clones of rubber adapted to the climatic conditions of the Northeast. 

  • Significance: this is the first time that a GM crop is specifically designed for the North East.


Natural Rubber:

  • Natural rubber is a native to the  warm humid climate of Amazon forests.

  • It is not naturally suited for the colder conditions in the Northeast, which is one of the largest Producers of rubber in India.

Study on Malnutrition of children

News:  A parliamentary panel has asked the ministry of women and child development to conduct a study on the malnutrition.


COVID-19 has brought in front many challenges:

  • Difficulty in providing meals in the form of mid day meals as schools were closed.

  • Delivery of anganwadi Services.

  • Increasing number of Orphans

Poshan Tracker

This is an application launched by the government that aims to monitor delivery of services at 14 lakh anganwadis.

Integrated theatre commands

News: Chief of Defence services said the PM can soon announce an integrated theatre command and the four theatre command

Significance:

  • If the three services integrate, bring about jointness and carry out transformation. Then it will ensure better efficiency and utilisation of  existing services. 

  • It will make all the three wings of Indian army better prepared for combat.

Four theatre command will include:

  • An air defence command,
    maritime theatre command, 

  • integrated eastern theatre command and 

  • integrated western theatre command 


Aim: to bring joint planning for the defence services.

The procedure for planning till now:

  • One Service will make a single plan.

  • This plan will then be routed through the headquarters and the Integrated Defence Command (IDS).

The proposed change in the plan:

  • The plan would be created by a three-star commander and integrated with other two domains.

  • These plans will then be presented to Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC) as opposed to a single plan being presented to a Chief,” the official said.

52nd Tiger Reserve Of India

NEWS:  Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary became the 52nd  Tiger Reserve of India.


About the news:

  • NTCA has approved the tiger reserve status for the   Ramgarh Vishdhari wildlife sanctuary.

  • It is situated in Rajasthan.

  • After its addition rajasthan now has 4 tiger reserve, other three includes:

    • Ranthambore, 

    • Sariska and 

    • Mukundra tiger reserves. 

About Ramgarh Vishdhari WLS:

  • The Ramgarh wildlife sanctuary is like a buffer for the Ranthambore National Park.

  • It is rich in biodiversity and wild animals.

  • A variety of wild animals like the Indian wolf, leopard, striped hyena, sloth bear, golden jackal, chinkara, nilgai can be spotted at the Ramgarh Wildlife Sanctuary.

Right to life

News: National Human Rights Commission said that the “right to life should prevail over the rights of patent-holders” so that life-saving medicines and vaccines for COVID-19 would be made available to the poor.

About Right to life:

Article 21: PROTECTION OF LIFE AND PERSONAL LIBERTY

Article 21 of the Indian constitution safeguard the individual right to life.

It says, “No person shall be deprived of his life and liberty except according to procedure established by law 1950”. Its dimensions include a decent environment, livelihood, shelter, health, free education till the age of 14 years, legal aid, against solitary confinement, speedy trial, handcuffing etc.

In MANEKA GANDHI CASE( 1978), Supreme court said an individual can be deprived of right to life provided the procedure prescribed by that law is just and fair.
