INDIA’S PREPARATION TO FIGHT CYCLONES

    India is continuously facing severe cyclones such as cyclone Tauktae which India is facing at present and last year Nisarga cyclone  in Arabina Sea. 

To prevent the loss of lives and handling severe cyclones:

•  India needs accurate forecasts. 

  • To serve the purpose the India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched an impact-based cyclone warning system last year. 

  • It was designed in order to reduce economic losses by focussing on districts and specific locations. 

  • It further incorporates factors such as population, infrastructure, land use and settlements.

  • As per IMD, the accuracy of this forecast mechanism is better.

  • It maps the vulnerability in order to avoid loss of life and destruction of property.

• Climate proofing lives:

  • Precise early warnings are not the only thing which is needed, along with this we need climate proofing lives and dwellings.

  • It needs a multi sector approach:

    • to build sturdy homes of suitable design,

    • create adequate storm shelters, 

    • provide accurate early warnings, and 

    • ensure financial protection against calamities through insurance for property and assets.
