CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE

  • These committees are set up under Juvenile justice act.

  • The State Governments are responsible to set up these child welfare committees in districts in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

  • Mandate of the committee is to dispose of the case for care, treatment and rehabilitation of the children who are in need of care and protection and to fulfill their basic needs.

  • They have been given the mandate to decide the custody of the children who have been left orphan due to the death of their parents amid the pandemic.

  • Members of Child Welfare Committees (CWCs):

    • The juvenile justice amendment act provided for the eligibility criteria of members of CWCs, A person is not eligible to be a member of the CWC if he/she

      • has a record of violation of human rights or child rights,

      • has been convicted of an offence involving moral turpitude,

      • has been removed or dismissed from service of the central government, or any state government, or a government undertaking,

      • is part of the management of a child care institution in a district.
