Gene Sequencing Laboratory
News: Rajasthan gets its new genome sequencing laboratory.
About the news:
The laboratory has been set up at Sawai Man Singh government medical college.
Significance: this allows the Rajajstan to become the first state to have complete genome sequencing facility at state level.
It will allow the government to sequence the COVID- 19 genome.
At present it can profile 10 samples per day, as per the guidelines of ICMR.
What is genome sequencing?
Genome sequencing refers to finding out/ decoding the sequence of nucleotides base pairs in the genetic material of an organism.
These nucleotide base pairs includes:
Adenine: found in DNA and RNA both
Guanine: found in DNA and RNA both
Cytosine: found in DNA and RNA both
Thymine: found in DNA only
Uracil: found in RNA only
