Disease burden due to neurological disorders

News: The report named disease burden due to neurological disorders  was published in The Lancet Global Health, by the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative.

It is the first comprehensive estimate of disease burden due to neurological disorders.


Findings in the report:

  • It says that the contribution of non-communicable neurological disorders and injury-related neurological disorders to the total disease burden has more than doubled between 1990 and 2019.

  • It highlights the ageing of the population is the main responsible for the increasing burden of noncommunicable neurological disorders.

  • Leading contributors to neurological disease are Stroke, headache disorders, and epilepsy. Dementias are the fastest growing neurological disease.

  • Main risk factors for neurological disease burden in India:

    • High blood pressure, air pollution, dietary risks, high fasting plasma glucose and high body-mass index.

  • Other neurological disease includes;

    • Communicable ones : encephalitis, meningitis and tetanus

    • Injury-related disorders: traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. 

  • Variation among states reflects the burden is higher in less developed states.
