Disease burden due to neurological disorders
News: The report named disease burden due to neurological disorders was published in The Lancet Global Health, by the India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative.
It is the first comprehensive estimate of disease burden due to neurological disorders.
Findings in the report:
It says that the contribution of non-communicable neurological disorders and injury-related neurological disorders to the total disease burden has more than doubled between 1990 and 2019.
It highlights the ageing of the population is the main responsible for the increasing burden of noncommunicable neurological disorders.
Leading contributors to neurological disease are Stroke, headache disorders, and epilepsy. Dementias are the fastest growing neurological disease.
Main risk factors for neurological disease burden in India:
High blood pressure, air pollution, dietary risks, high fasting plasma glucose and high body-mass index.
Other neurological disease includes;
Communicable ones : encephalitis, meningitis and tetanus
Injury-related disorders: traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries.
Variation among states reflects the burden is higher in less developed states.
