G-7 Summit

  • The 47th G- 7 Summit being held at Carbis Bay, U.K. 

  • The outreach session is being held on the topic of Open Societies and Open Economies.

  • India was invited as a guest to the session of G-7.

  • Significance of the Summit:

    • G-7 endorsed the ``Build Back Better World” (B3W) initiative proposed by the U.S. President  Joseph Biden, which is seen as a counter to China’s Belt and Road initiative.

    • It will adhere to the principles of transparency and inclusion.

    • It made a call for timely, transparent, expert-led, and science-based WHO-convened Phase 2 COVID-19 Origins study including, as recommended by the experts’ report, in China.

    • G7 countries committed to donating a billion vaccines to poorer countries and  a session on climate change actions leading up to the COP-26 summit in the U.K.

  • India statement:

    • The Prime Minister of India said that India is the world’s largest democracy, India is a natural ally for the G7.

    • The Prime Minister of India called upon tech companies and social media platforms to ensure a safe cyber environment.

    • India Seeks support from G-7 joint India-South Africa proposal for a TRIPs (Intellectual Property Rights) waiver for coronavirus-related vaccines and medicines.

China Activity around LAC

News: Even after a year of clash around the Line of Actual control in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh, the Chinese People Liberation army has built additional accommodation, infrastructure for medical and transport on its side and slow mobility vehicles have been procured. 


Significance: 

  • As per the experts this is an indication of chinese intention of winter occupation of posts of  Rudok, Kangxiwar, Gyantse and Golmud areas.

  • Further China is aggressively pursuing infrastructure activity in main confronting points.

  • They have also conducted exercises in Tibet and opposite Arunachal Pradesh. Such as Shigatse in Tibet

Rosewood

News: There has been incidences of widespread illegal felling of the Rosewood.

About Rosewood:

  • Rosewood is scientifically known as Albergia latifolia.

  • It is an endangered species under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has included it in the Red List of Threatened Species in 1998.

  • They have deep taproots and long lateral roots.

  • It is tropical hardwood.

Threat:

  •  The steep demand of the rosewood, in the international market for musical instruments and furniture fashioned has led to illegal felling of the trees.

  • Overexploitation, low seed germination percentage in natural conditions and slow growth rate has led to a decreasing population of rosewood in forest areas.
